Dear Senator, I stand together in solidarity with our Muslim friends and partners – and all people of goodwill and faith – to condemn your recent Islamophobic remarks. Your hurtful, disrespectful statements demean Muslims and Islam, the chosen faith of many in your district and across the Commonwealth. I urge you to apologize. No Virginian should have to feel that their elected representative thinks less of them because of who they are. Your recent Facebook post is factually incorrect as well as irresponsible. The misguided and dishonest references to Arabs, Islam, ‘Alah,’ and ‘the Harem’ have nothing to do with wearing a mask to protect oneself and others from infectious diseases. The discussion on masks should be based on health, safety, and collective responsibilities and should not incite disunity and hatred in our community. You must do better. Thank you.
