Workers and their families get sick. Everyone needs paid time off to care for themselves and loved ones. Virginia needs a Paid Sick Day standard to ensure that all employers in Virginia provide their full-time workers with paid sick time.
COVID-19 has demonstrated to all of us how important it is for workers to have paid sick days and how quickly illnesses are spread when workers go to work when sick. The federal CARES act, which expires at the end of the year, requires many employers to provide up to 10 paid sick days (80 hours) to most workers for COVID-19 related illness. However, this is only a temporary fix. Next year, we will be back in the same situation as before with approximately 1.2 million Virginia workers (41 percent of private sector workers) who have no paid sick days.
During the 2020 Special Session, VICPP is working on a bill to provide 5 paid sick days to full time workers at all businesses in Virginia. It would also require workers to be able to take up to 80 hours of paid sick time for treatment of COVID-19 or care of a family member with COVID-19. Workers and their families need paid sick days every year and they need enough time to quarantine during a pandemic.
Please sign this petition asking your legislators to support a Paid Sick Day standard during the Special Session.
