This year, Virginia's General Assembly approved a policy that would prevent civil immigration arrests in certain sensitive locations. While the state can't control everything that the federal government does, these bills (SB 351 and HB 650) offered protections from immigration enforcement in local and state controlled buildings, including courthouses and public schools.
However, there is an amendment proposed by the governor that would remove consequences of immigration enforcement in these areas. While the proposed bill language is well intentioned, it is important that the legislature reject these proposed amendments and stay with the bill language as it originally passed last month. That original language ensures consequences for any law enforcement, including ICE, that violates the law.
