Welcome to November, a season of time changes, cooler weather, Thanksgiving, and civic engagement in the Commonwealth. It’s a busy season for our team here at Virginia Interfaith, and we want you to stay informed, get involved, and join us in the fight for progress.
First up, the General Assembly convened a special session last week to debate a constitutional amendment on redistricting. The proposed amendment HJ6007 has passed both the House and the Senate, clearing the first hurdle to appear on the 2026 ballot. Here's what you need to know: constitutional amendments require passage through both chambers twice, with an election cycle between sessions. Now that the amendment was approved during this special session, it will return for consideration in the 2026 General Assembly session making your continued civic engagement essential.
Next, in last week’s newsletter we shared the news that Virginia has created a new temporary program called the Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) that will distribute funds to EBT cards weekly, rather than releasing all benefits at the beginning of the month. The first wave of these benefits was sent out on November 3rd, the second group will receive their benefits on Nov. 5th, and the third on Nov. 7th. Recognizing that this change in distribution may create additional hardship for families, the state has also allocated an additional one million dollars to assist food banks. If you are interested in donating food or funds to your area food bank, sign up for the new Virginia Cares Initiative to get information on the items needed, as well as drop-off locations and times in your region.
Last but certainly not least, Tuesday was election day in the Commonwealth! I had the opportunity to visit nine different polling sites across Richmond, and it was inspiring to see democracy at work. The record turnout in this election is directly related to the top issues in Virginia. Many voters shared how the cost of living was their chief concern, along with immigration, education, and the environment. This deeply underscores the work that we do here at VICPP and why it is so critical to stay engaged in every election, every year.
Congratulations to all the winners, and we look forward to working with you in 2026!
