Weekly Roundup - June 25, 2025 - Call to Action – Standing for Justice
View in your browser

Dear ,

This week, before the July Fourth break, the Senate is expected to vote on budget reconciliation legislation that includes concerning provisions affecting Medicaid and immigration funding. The Senate version contains measures that would fundamentally alter how we care for our most vulnerable neighbors:

  • New barriers to healthcare: Additional work and verification requirements for Medicaid recipients that could strip coverage from working families struggling to make ends meet.

  • Targeting immigrant families: Cuts to Medicaid funding for states that provide coverage to certain immigrant groups, forcing states to choose between federal dollars and caring for vulnerable residents.

  • Reducing food security: Changes to SNAP that could result in many people losing coverage, leaving families without adequate nutrition.

  • Expanding enforcement over care: Nearly $120 million in additional funding for border security and detention operations, prioritizing punishment over compassion.

Please take action today! Call Sen.Tim Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner. Thank them for their steadfast commitment to justice for all Virginians, and urge them to vote against this harmful legislation.

  • Sen. Tim Kaine: 202-224-4024

  • Sen. Mark Warner: 202-224-2023

When you call, remember: Your senators need to hear that their constituents value mercy over harsh measures, that we believe healthcare is a human right, and that our faith calls us to welcome the stranger—not build higher walls.

Additionally, for those in Virginia's 11th Congressional District, you have another opportunity to use your voice this week. Following the passing of Rep. Gerry Connolly in May, a Democratic primary will be held on June 28 to select the party's nominee for the special election this fall.

  • Firehouse Primary Date: Saturday, June 28

  • Early Voting: June 24, 25, and 26 from 3 to 8 p.m.

Your voice matters. Your vote counts. Your faith demands action. The call is clear. Let us act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly into this moment together.

In Solidarity,
Keisha
