Dear ,
It’s been a busy week at the General Assembly as our state legislators work hard to get through thousands of bills before Crossover on February 4th. Crossover is the time when all the bills that have successfully passed through one chamber of the General Assembly, cross over to be voted on in the other chamber. Our staff, interns, and Witnesses at the Capitol have been working hard, speaking to legislators and advocating for justice for all Virginians. Here are some of the highlights of the past week.
Maternal Health – The Senate and House bills requiring Unconscious Bias Training for medical practitioners (SB 740) and (HB 1649) PASSED with bi-partisan support.
Criminal Justice – The Senate version of the bill (SB 1255) to end the indiscriminate use of youth shackling PASSED UNANIMOUSLY in the Senate. The House version (HB 2222) passed unanimously out of committee and should be up for a floor vote later this week.
The House bill (HB 2158) that expands access to college education for people who are incarcerated, passed unanimously on Monday in the K-12 subcommittee and passed in the full Education committee today with bi-partisan support.
Affordable Housing – The Senate version (SB 1178) of our Faith and Housing bill will be on the agenda of Senate/Finance and Appropriations this week. The House bill (HB 2153) is on a subcommittee docket tomorrow.
Worker Justice – The Paid Sick Days (HB 1921) bill passed out of the House Labor and Commerce Committee on Tuesday afternoon and is on the docket with Appropriations this afternoon.
Please visit the VICPP Bill tracker for more information on the progress of our bills. And be on the lookout for action alerts this week as our bills continue to move. Your advocacy is making a difference!!!
Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. LaKeisha Cook Co-Executive Director |
