General Assembly Delayed Until Next Week - Jan. 8, 2025
View in your browser

Dear ,

Today was supposed to be the first day of the 2025 General Assembly, but it is only starting “pro forma” (gaveled in and then recessed) to allow Richmond to recover from the water outage. The real business, committee meetings and votes will start next Monday.

The last two days were a little wild for our staff team, given the snow (which Richmond is not prepared to handle), lack of water and a “boil water order” due to a water infrastructure problem in Richmond, closed schools and even shut down the General Assembly building. But, like during the pandemic, we persevered. A little snow and lack of water doesn’t stop VICPP’s intrepid team!

I personally am happy to have a couple extra days to prepare for the General Assembly. No matter how much I think we’ve prepared throughout the Fall, the General Assembly seems to rush upon us.

We’ve been nailing down all the details and final copy on factsheets for Day for All People – which is next Wednesday, January 15. You can still register until Sunday night. There is still a bit of room on the three buses from NOVA, Hampton Roads and Roanoke/Charlottesville. After you register, you can sign up for the buses (first come-first serve). If you haven’t yet registered and would like to, CLICK HERE TO REGISTER
or on the button below.

Next Monday will also be our first Social Media Team post. We ask volunteers to repost our Facebook and/or Instagram post Monday through Friday during the General Assembly. If you’d like to help with this important outreach, please email Roberta@virginiainterfaithcenter.org.

We are grateful for all the year-end financial support that enables VICPP to hit the ground running in the New Year.  Thank you.

Stay tuned for Action Alerts and legislative updates.

Staying warm and busy,

Our friends at the national ACLU are hosting a training this Thursday, January 9 at 8pm on Know Your Rights, as well as how to respond to potential mass deportation efforts from the incoming presidential administration.

Report: Virginia's faith communities want to build affordable housing and they have plenty of land to do so

Radio IQ/WVTF, January 5, 2025
By, Brad Kutner

Sheila Herlihy Hennessee, Faith Organizing Director at the Virginia Interfaith Center, released a report last month that analyzes Faith-Based Property Ownership in Virginia. She is quoted in the article (linked below), “A lot of faith communities are looking at their land as an incredibly valuable resource and want to use it to benefit the community.”
