I voted today - September 27, 2023
View in your browser

Dear ,

I voted this morning. It was easy and fast, except for finding a parking spot. My Senate and House districts only had one candidate each, so perhaps my vote didn't affect the outcome, but voting matters. Voting is a privilege, an opportunity and an obligation. It's something we should do to ensure our democracy.  But we can do more than vote. Let's get to know the candidates ahead of time and encourage others to vote.

This is the season for candidate forums. Last week, VICPP cohosted one Candidate Forum in Prince William County and one Meet-and-Greet with candidates in Williamsburg. Within the next week, we have a Candidate Forum in Suffolk and a Meet in Greet in Henrico. Registrations links are below for all the upcoming forums and events.  Attend one of ours or one sponsored by others. It is a great chance to learn about the candidates and how they propose to make Virginia more welcoming, fair and equitable.

In last week's roundup, I included some photos of congregations with the 100 percent voting banners. This week, I've included the full list of congregations that have taken the 100 percent voting pledge, organized by faith tradition. Please check out the list below and see if your congregation is included and which congregations in your tradition have signed up.

It's not too late to take the pledge. Pledging to be 100 percent voting means you will do your best to get people to register and vote. You will encourage people. You will hang the banner. You will provide information.  And VICPP will help you. We have a toolkit, resources, a free banner, and even a financial incentive if you will participate in a study of congregations encouraging people to vote.  We are hoping to demonstrate the value of congregations encouraging voting. Take the pledge today! The pledge is below as well.

Tis the season...

Sincerely,

Kim Bobo
Executive Director

Promote the Vote!

Join us on October 4, 11 AM, at the Bell Tower, Capitol Square in Richmond

VICPP is collaborating with REV UP* Virginia and more than a dozen disability and allied organizations to amplify the voices and votes of the 1.4 million Virginians with disabilities, and their families. Here's a link to a recent Op Ed. People of color are overrepresented among those with disabilities, and the challenge of low income is widespread because of un- and under-employment. Whether the result of genetics, incident, or aging, disability is a fact of life for many and, eventually, perhaps for most. We invite you to join us at the press conference on October 4 to stand up, sit down, or roll through in support of expanding and preserving voting access, like early, absentee, and polling place provisions, in addition to calling for resolution of barriers to employment and relief from poverty.

*REV UP stands for: Register! Educate! Vote! Use your Power! It is a campaign of the American Association of People with Disabilities.
