VICPP is led by an amazing board of directors – people who devote time, wisdom and resources to building, guiding, and representing VICPP. The board helps VICPP achieve its mission of engaging people of faith and goodwill in advocating economic, racial and social justice in Virginia’s policies and practices.

Let me introduce the six new board members elected at the Annual Meeting and one other elected at the September board meeting:

Rev. Dr. James Coleman is the Senior Pastor of Providence Transformation Church International in Lynchburg, Virginia and serves as the Faculty Chair and Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Virginia University of Lynchburg. He is also the Social Justice Chair of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, and Second Vice President of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia.

Rev. Kendra Grimes, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, is Chaplain and Director of Church Relations at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, VA.

Dr. Mark James is the Assistant Dean of Students at Virginia Union University in Richmond. He has already recruited 24 students for our Student Day of Action on February 2-3 (yeah).

Mr. Josh Jeffreys is the Jewish Chaplain and Director of Religious Life at the University of Richmond.

Rev. Dr. Kaiya Jennings, an ordained preacher in the Baptist tradition, is the University Chaplain and Director of Belonging at Hollins University in Roanoke.

Ms. Cynthia Perez-Bullard is the VICPP congregational liaison for the Church of the Resurrection in Alexandria and works as a writing coach at Academic Resource Center at Virginia Theological Seminary.

Ms. Farah Salam-Hottle is the Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Vaco, a global consulting and talent solutions firm. Living in Hanover, she is active in assisting Afghan refugees in central Virginia.

We’re excited about the talent, experience and energy being added to the Board of Directors – six of them start their terms January 1. But, we are sad to be losing some long-term board members who have guided the work for many years. I’d like to especially thank:

Ms. Julie Swanson, who has served as Board President for the last few years, Treasurer before that, and general board member before that. Julie’s nonprofit experience and passion for justice have made her a fabulous board chair. She has become a dear friend to me and others. Thank you, Julie.

Mr. Warren Hottle, who is our historian, reminds us of our history and commitments. Warren has served three full-terms, but served previously after rotating off for a year, as the by-laws require. Warren and his wife Lucy hosted me in their home for several months when I first moved to Richmond. Thank you, Warren.

Rabbi Gary Creditor, has also served on the board for many years. He was an important connector for VICPP with the Jewish community. I am personally grateful for his leadership with our Richmond Living Wage Certification program. Thank you, Gary.

You can see how blessed we have been and are going forward with our leaders. They all give generously of the time, talent and treasure. VICPP is stronger because of them.

Student Day of Action Registration Also Open!
Feb. 3, 2022 in Person, Richmond

Students of Virginia -- Join us to learn the legislative process in Virginia and how to advocate with your elected representatives! Come into Richmond Thursday evening (Feb. 2) for dinner with legislators, an overview of how to lobby, and a social time. Friday morning (Feb. 3), we will start the day with an opportunity to meet with your representatives in the General Assembly. Afterwards, we will have lunch and workshops on how to bring advocacy to campus, and standing up for justice in various spheres. Keep an eye out for workshop registrations coming soon!

Bonus: We're working with some universities for professors to offer class credit when you attend this event! Check with your professor to find out if you qualify.
