We invite you to listen in on a discussion between local activists and leaders fighting for environmental justice throughout Virginia.

We will be learning about the history of the environmental justice movement, the disproportionate environmental and health hazards faced by communities of color, and what we hope to see in Virginia’s future as we move towards cleaner, more equitable environmental policies.

Join our very own Rev. Dr. Faith Harris and our friends at Creation Justice Ministries this Wednesday for a roundtable discussion about faith and Virginia's federal policy.

There will be a briefing on creation justice-related federal public policy opportunities in the coming months and video clips will be used in a social media video that tags members of Congress throughout August recess. The discussion will aslo include planning for meetings with VA US Congressional delegation members during July-August.

This broadcast will include guests: Mary Finley-Brook, Associate Professor of Geography and the Environment, University of Richmond; Narissa Turner, Policy & Campaigns Manager, Virginia Conservation Network; and 
Harrison Wallace, Virginia Director, Chesapeake Climate Action Network. The discussion will be moderated by Kidest Gebre, VAIPL Steering Committee.

You're invited to join us for a Virtual Summit on Climate Resilience with the Southeast Faith Leaders Network.

Coastal faith communities are not ready for climate-driven disasters like intensifying hurricanes and sea level rise. Yet, those same communities who will be most threatened also have an opportunity to play a pivotal role in building resilience in their towns and cities. Learn from people who are on the frontlines of disaster, disaster response, crafting public policy, and mapping out a faith community plan, and leave with tools to build resilience and climate preparedness in your community.

Speakers include:
Representative Kathy Castor (FL-14), Chair of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis
Representative Don McEachin (VA-04), Co-Chair of the US House Environmental Justice Task Force and member of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis
Gerald Godette (minister at St. Paul AME Zion, Aurora, NC). After multiple experiences of his church flooding from hurricanes, Gerald is working on climate education and resilience with his congregants.
Avery Davis Lamb (student at Duke Divinity School/Nicholas School of the Environment), will share GIS research on climate impacts on churches and reflections on how churches can be hubs of resilience.
Rev. Dr. Faith B. Harris (Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology/VA Interfaith Power and Light), will offer prayer and theological grounding.

The 2020 elections could not be more significant. The outcome will set the course on climate change for years to come. On top of that, we are in the midst of a global pandemic, a major recession, record joblessness, and our nation is in turmoil over police killings that have exposed the deep inequities and racial injustice in our nation.

That’s why IPL and Faith in Public Life partnered to create a multi-issue faith voter reflection guide – Democracy, Values & the 2020 Election: A Reflection Guide for Faith Communities. The nonpartisan guide offers timely sections that address urgent moral issues at stake in this election and beyond. Topics include justice for immigrants, economic dignity, care for creation and climate change, racism and criminal justice reform, democracy and voting rights, health care and the coronavirus pandemic, and global peacebuilding. Reflection questions are included to help spark conversation in your faith communities and to help prime questions addressed to candidates running for office.

The safety restrictions around COVID-19 limit many of the ways IPL would normally distribute the guide. We’ll be relying on our congregations and activists for safe distribution. We are excited to keep building a movement for justice with you!

MNIPL's Be the Spark leadership development program shares tools and practices for how to build positive, creative, and committed teams to fuel energized action on climate within faith communities.

Over six sessions you’ll build premier organizing skills and learn strategic approaches for engaging your faith community in the growing interfaith climate justice movement. Sessions will be held online.
