Religious Fact-Finding Delegation to Learn about the Lawrenceville Correctional Center

Registration is closed for this event
As VICPP continues our work on criminal justice reform, we are getting to know the private prison-industrial complex in Virginia. Join us to learn more.

Please Note:

*You must register ahead of time to participate in the fact finding delegation. Once approved, you will receive an email with more information.

Purpose: To learn more about conditions for people who are incarcerated, correctional officers, and community members who live near the Lawrenceville prison and what can be done to improve conditions. VICPP has been invited to Lawrenceville by the Brunswick NAACP and other community organizations.

Background: Help us bring humaneness back to a Virginia community who continues to suffer! The Lawrenceville prison is the state’s only private for-profit prison. It is operated by the GEO group under a fifteen-year contract that ends July of 2023. VICPP has heard terrible things about the lack of food and medical attention for people who are incarcerated, the low pay and terrible working conditions for correctional officers, and the environmental and financial concerns of the community. VICPP has organized a religious fact-finding team to learn about the conditions and what can be done to improve them, and has been invited by the Brunswick NAACP and other community member organizations.

Join us for our first team meeting on Saturday, July 23 in Lawrenceville, VA 23868, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We are organizing carpools from Richmond. Please note that advance registration is required and must be approved. After approval, an email will be sent with more information.

What will we do:

  • Listen to formerly incarcerated people, wives and family members of currently incarcerated men, correctional officers, and community leaders.
  • Review background information on for-profit prisons and the GEO group.
  • Develop plans for advocating improved conditions.

Carpools: VICPP will organize carpools from the Richmond area.

Register: You must register ahead of time to participate in the fact finding delegation.
