About the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy
The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP) advocates economic, racial, social and environmental justice in Virginia’s policies and practices through education, prayer, and action. The organization includes more than 22,000 people of faith and other people of goodwill working through congregations, local chapters, college campuses, and online communities. VICPP’s current priorities include:
-
Medicaid Expansion Enrollment: VICPP was the leading faith voice advocating Medicaid expansion. This year, VICPP is helping to enroll hundreds of people through our Health Care Hope initiatives.
-
Wage justice: VICPP passed two wage theft reforms in the General Assembly in 2019. One reform removes many of the Jim Crow-era exemptions from the Virginia Minimum Wage code (like newsboys and shoeshine boys). Another reform requires Virginia employers to provide most workers with a paystub explaining how they are paid. VICPP is organizing Living Wage Certification programs in Richmond, Alexandria, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Williamsburg to honor and recognize employers that pay living wages.
-
Welcoming all: VICPP seeks to make Virginia more welcoming to immigrants, people of color and other marginalized people. VICPP advocated a Driver’s Privilege Card and In-State Tuition for immigrants. Neither passed the 2019 General Assembly, but VICPP will work to pass them in 2020. In addition, VICPP supports the Central Virginia Sanctuary Network and encourages congregations in N. Virginia to support the Sanctuary Network.
-
Criminal justice reform. VICPP supported reforms and convened a criminal justice table of advocates during the 2019 General Assembly. VICPP is urging the Governor to create a task force to address broader criminal justice reforms in 2020.
-
Environmental justice. VICPP merged with Virginia Interfaith Power and Light (VAPIL), which is focused on climate change and environmental racism. VAIPL mobilized faith support for families in Buckingham County opposing the placement of a compressor station in their neighborhood.
